Welcome to The Nerdy Rat.

A podcast about pet rats and the nerds that love them. Your hosts Liz and Matt have been fostering rats for Small Angels Rescue since 2013. Small Angels is a rescue for rats, mice, guinea pigs and hamsters serving the DC, Virginia, and Maryland Area.  If you are in the area and looking for a new family member, see their animals available for adoption right now. If you are not in our area but would like to adopt, here is a list of rescues around the country.

New episodes every 2 weeks.  You can email us any questions for the podcast to thenerdyrat@gmail.com

Episode 17: Wednesday 11-29-2017

Matt and Liz talk about the long awaited Justice League movie, our foster rats, the end of the Marvel Heroes game, and more.

In rat updates, we are concerned about some new foster boys who are underweight and don’t seem to be eating. We will be taking them to the vet this week for a check-up. Our PEW foster girls need a forever parent who’s tolerant of getting chomped on and bitten while being smothered with ratty love. And, our own rats are upset that we loaned one of their wheels to the fosters.

In Local Animal News, the DC eagles continue rebuilding their nest in preparation for some new babies. And speaking of babies, Bei Bei the (toddler) baby panda at the National Zoo had some stomach issues this week, but he’s ok now.

In Nerdy News, the online game Marvel Heroes shut down after laying off employees the day before Thanksgiving. Boo, hiss! Liz figured out (i.e. googled) how to beat the desert maze in the RPG Legionwood: Tale of the Two Swords. And, we have a LOT to say about the new Justice League movie. Including what we think of that Amazon warrior costuming controversy. Finally, we discuss our hopes (based on a twitter hashtag) for an animated Justice League movie!

Episode 15: Wednesday 10-26-2017

Liz and Matt talk about their favorite Halloween movies, Ikea’s new pet line, Flash Season 4, and more.

In Ratty News, we share updates about fosters and share our sadness that we had to put our beloved rattie Krysa down due to cogestive heart failure and mammary tumors.

In Local Animal News, IKEA releases a new line of pet items. Also, good news for rat lovers – Washington, DC is one of the nation’s most rat-infested cities!

It’s Halloween on The Nerdy Rat! In Nerdy Topics, we talk about Halloween bonuses in our current games – a decor pack for Gardenscapes and a very elusive headless horseman mount for World of Warcraft.

What are some of our favorite Halloween movies? Classic Universal, the Christopher Lee Dracula series, Goosebumps with Jack Black, and of course the classics – Halloween, Living Dead, Friday the 13th, and Nightmare on Elm Street. We are attending a live appearance by Count Gore de Vol at the AFI Silver Spring this weekend for a werewolf double feature with I Was a Teenage Werewolf and American Werewolf in London, so tune in next episode for our reviews.

Also, Matt’s Extra Life stream is this weekend which benefits our Washington, DC Children’s Hospital. All donations go directly to patient care so please support this great cause!

Episode 14: Wednesday 10-11-2017

Liz and Matt talk about Blade Runner 2049, SNES Mini, and more.

In Ratty News and Education, we talk about how our little baby girl Dawn is fitting in and who’s protecting her in the cage when Pinky got a little aggressive. Have you ever seen little scabs on your rats and not known what they were? Chances are your rats have mites. We talk about how Cat Revolution is the best treatment for mites, where to obtain it, and how to apply it.

In Local Animal News, the two Washington, DC bald eagles have returned to their nest from their summer hiatus! Can we expect another batch of babies soon?

For Nerdy News, there’s a new goose stealth game due for release in 2018 which looks amazing. It doesn’t have a title yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated on new developments. Also in gaming, we created a Nerdy Rat Steam group! We hope to see you there!

Episode 13: Tuesday 09-26-2017

Liz and Matt talk foster rat updates, Dawn moving into the big cage, and Krysa’s mammary tumor surgery. Also in rat topics, why we stopped using the Snak Shak and some cautionary advice to prevent your rats from biting.

In local animal news, we discuss Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary’s upcoming Open House on Sunday, October 1, 2017.

In nerdy topics, we saw Cary Elwes live at a 30th Anniversary screening of The Princess Bride. On a darker note, Matt discusses the new movie It. Liz and Matt discuss what movie they can compromise on for Halloween since Liz doesn’t like true horror but will watch zombies, some vampires, and classic (hilarious) horror or Mystery Science Theater. We wonder if Count Gore de Vol will be doing some monster movie screenings this month at the AFI Silver in Silver Spring.

In gaming, Gardenscapes has a new companion app game called Homescapes, where Austin the butler renovates his parents’ dilapidated mansion. And, Matt has been playing League of Legends again with his friends.

Matt’s Extra Life stream is coming up the last weekend of October! For every dollar you donate (100% of which supports the DC Children’s Hospital patient care fund), you can request that Matt play 1 minute of any game you choose (that is free or that he currently owns.) Last year his mom made him play Candy Crush for an hour.

In other animal news we discuss local Facebook hero Otis T. Squeaks (a stuffed hippo) and a hotel which offers pet goldfish for your stay.

For nerdy topics we talk about the new Castlevania Netflix series, a clown-only screening of the movie It, and Rick and Morty.

Under gaming we review Gardenscapes, Magic Jigsaw Puzzles, Ziggurat, and Destiny 2.
